Celmira Cordero works as a Tenant Advocate and HUD Certified Housing Counselor for New Brunswick Tomorrow. She began as a community volunteer and leader for NBT’s Esperanza Neighborhood Project in 2014 before progressing to work as a community outreach ambassador and then these last four years in the Housing Area, specializing in Landlord-Tenant issues. Through NBT’s Housing Support Line, she has assisted 750 families and counting with housing issues such as illegal rent increases, substandard conditions, evictions, and more. She also conducts outreach and education on tenant rights and helps to organize the New Brunswick Tenants Association. Through this Association, tenants have achieved local policy victories such as the regulation of water charges and the reduction of maximum rent increases.
